82 Aspy Rear wheel bearing

Postby rexles » Mon Sep 07, 2009 7:13 pm

I removed my rear wheel bearings due to some play in the rear wheel from side to side and some noise.
The bearing oposite the retaining nut side was loose in the hub. It had to be tapped out, but was still loose. Not press fit. I have new bearings on order. If the new bearing is loose in the hub, what next?? :?:

If it's loose in the hub, then the old bearing likely seized and spun, and it's no wonder you had play in the wheel.

It's likely the new bearing will also be loose in the hub, which won't do you much good.

The best, and easiest, and cheapest fix is to take the wheel to a machine shop. They will machine out the hub, and press a sleeve in that will accept the original bearing size correctly.

Well I decided the bearing was way too loose to try Loctite or any peening so after searching around, I bought a used wheel and have it all cleaned up waiting for my bearings.
This site with the downloads in invaluable. I have two manuals and the pictures and explainations you give are far superior. Neither manual tells you to pull off the caliper bracket and the last time I had my rear wheel off for a tire change I had a heck of a time getting it out. Thanks for the info on gear oil change and Moly 60 for the gears too.

That's the reason I started doing these really - I was doing procedures as the manual stated, and they were just impossible, or there were huge gaps in the instructions. I thought, "some guy who doesn't have a lot of experience doing this is going to be just lost - I should document this and put it on the web...." and a light bulb went off. :)
