82 Aspy Speedometer screw

Postby rexles » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:58 pm

Well it is that time of year to replace front tire and I can not get the screw loose for the speedometer cable.
Any ideas :?:
I have tried an impact screwdriver with no luck :(

Just pull the axle. Leave it attached to the cable.

Eventually you will want to loosen/remove the screw. At this point my best suggestion is to drill out the old screw. It's a 5mm screw so use a 6mm drill bit (or close to 1/4" but not bigger) It's a tapered screw so you'll want to drill out the head…. not the threads. Once the head is off you can remove the rest of the cable and use some pliers or vise grips to unscrew the remaining threads.

It's reasonably easy to remove the front wheel without removing the speedo cable from the speedo drive - just pull the entire speedo drive off the wheel once the axle is undone.

That said, like mentioned here, you will want to remove it at some point. The screw on mine was seized, and I never bothered to undo it until the speedo cable failed, and I HAD to undo it in order to replace the cable.

I found a fairly heavy-duty impact screwdriver fairly cheap (I believe $20 or so) at partsnmore.com, and that, along with a dead blow hammer, loosened the screw with two blows. This was after a lot of work trying to get it loose on my own.

I may have also used some PB Blaster on the screw a few hours earlier, to help loosen it up.

I REALLY didn't want to have to drill it, and in the end, I didn't. Get yourself an impact screwdriver, and you should be able to get it loose.

I looked it up - here is the one I used:

I have an impact screwdriver just like that and it did not work. I wll try it again after I get the axle out and the front wheel off. I also soaked it down with some PB blaster. New screw will have some neverseize put on before it goes back together.
