I have directions in a haynes manual to check the voltage regulator. Do you want them?

I found some for the alternator. It says. use an ammeter and a volt meter. Connect voltmeter across pos and neg battery terminals. disconnect positive lead from battety and reconnect through ammeter. the ammeter a scale of 0-5 amps the voltmeter at 0-20 volts so that's your settings. next start the engine. let it run 5 mins. increase the rpm's to 5,000 the readings should be 3amps and 14.5 volts it says before doing this make sure you are on low beam and the fan is not running and you have a fully charged battery. Sorry about my bad typing I hope this helps you. If you PM me you can call me and I'll read this all to you out of the book there is more about figureing out if it's the rectifier or regulator

OK.I'll try to step it thru.Unplug the stator.Ohm meter test for a 'near short' between the 3 yellow wires,1 pair at a time. Each wire should be near 0 ohms with another one.Next, check from one stator wire to ground,It should be very high in ohms or none at all. This is normal. The stator wiring does not go to ground. You could check for volts with the bike running, but be aware, the measurements are taken between 2 yellow wires at a time, and can be 30 volt AC and more.Don't bother checking for AC volts to ground because the stator does not use any ground connection. When plugged up and running, check the DC volts from the battery terminal ground and the battery hot terminal.Voltages will vary from 11-14.8 volt DC with RPM.If voltages don't go up,measure on the other side of the dogbone fuse from the battery( it's on the starter relay). The fuse is subject to cracking and corrosion. Also measure from the + and the engine.Corroded ground lug.Let us know what you find.See attached pix.Virgil
