Rear axle bolt

Postby rexles » Fri Sep 11, 2009 1:40 pm

82 Aspencade
I follow the instuctions for Rear Wheel R&R and am having trouble with axle. When I tighten it it pulls threw swing arm and into outside spacer and puts a bind on the tire because it pulls it into the driveshaft tube. The only way i can get it not to bind is not tighten it real tight. What am I doing wrong???? :?: :?:

I'm not 100% sure I understand what your problem is. I assume you're talking about tightening the castle nut on the axle, correct? This one?

When you are tightening this nut (to 65 ft-lbs, use a torque wrench!), you should be holding the axle on the other side to keep it from rotating:

Are you saying that when you tighten it, the tire ends up too close to the swingarm/driveshaft housing, so that it rubs against it? Is this a new tire?

Or is it that the axle is being pulled THROUGH the swingarm end (the pinch bolt area) on the left side of the wheel when you tighten it? If that is the case, you may need to install the pinch bolt and tighten it down a bit to prevent the axle from pulling through before you tighten the axle nut:

The axle seems to pull threw and bind the tire into the driveshaft housing. I tightened the pinch nut down and then the castle nut and it seems ok.
The two spacers are in and in right.

So even with the pinch nut tightened, it still pulls the axle through?

I did not tighten it real tight even with the pinch bolt tightened. I have no noticible side to side movement.

There shouldn't be side to side movement. I guess I still don't 100% understand what your problem actually is, then.

I know there should be no side to side movement. I was trying to move it side to side after tightening the axle just to make sure it wouldn't wobble. I just rode 80 mi and it seems fine. I guess I will just need to tighten the pinch bolt before trying to tighten the axle in the future.
Thanks for all your help.

Someone on another GW forum suggested I put the wrong spacer in, and I went and measured the distance between where the bearing seated in the old wheel and sure enough I have a spacer pipe measuring 3 3/8" and the distance between bearings is 2 7/8". So I put the wrong spacer in.
Now, have I done any damage by riding 100 miles :?: Is there any thing that will mess up if I wait till I need a new tire (next yr) before I tear this back apart????
