'83 GL1100 Winter Project

Postby Youngeez » Thu Mar 03, 2011 9:19 pm

I purchased a 1983 GL1100A in the fall for a winter project. It was sitting in a driveway half-covered with a tarp and looked pretty rough. The older gentleman that answered the door said he bought the bike and a spare engine a couple of years ago with the idea to fix it up but never got around to it. I bought both hoping that it would be salvageable. A quick cleaning of the carbs, an auxiliary fuel tank and a jumper box got the beast to start and run well enough for me to go through the gears and make sure it was all there. It didn't run well but judging by the rust in the tank, seized brakes, and puking fork seals it has been sitting for a while.
The thermostat didn' seem to open, so I removed and tested it. While there I also replaced the coolant, oil/filter, plugs, T-belts and checked the valves. Interesting that the belts that were on it were a tooth off on the left side. Got it warmed up and checked compression 1-140 , 2-143 , 3-150 , 4-145. :D
I did an on-bike vinegar tank de-rusting, put it together and headed out for short ride. It was running so rich that the plugs fouled in 15 minutes and dropped cylinders. Pulled the carbs again and cleaned them better, set pilot screws at 1-1/2 turns and put in new plugs but it is still running super rich. Looks like I need to get a Randakk's kit. Any other suggestions?
The spare engine does not look to be an '83 as the idle jets are non-removable and it has a single piston rear caliper. The numbers on the block are SC02E 2116007. Any help in finding out my spare engine's year would be greatly appreciated. :?:
Thanks for any help.

Pressed in jets are 80 or 81..but year doesn't really matter much all the 1100's are the same engine..with very few changes..idle jets, tach cable, choke set up are a few but no big deals. All internals and heads are the same.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll clean up the spare carb set and give them a try.

I'm not sure on a motor cylce, but my motor scooter and my cars all have accelerator pumps, you might wish to check these as if they are stuck they can flood the carbs.

I've been cleaning up my spare set of carbs to give them a try. Unlike the set that's on my bike ('83) this set has pressed in idle jets and #3 was clogged bad. In researching how to clean it out I found some info that indicates that the Diameter of the hole through the middle of the jet is around .010. Since I am having trouble getting that jet cleared I decided to go back and pull the set on the bike again and re-check some things. What I found is that the screw-in idle jets measure over .020 ???? I would think that it should be the same size as the pressed jets but haven't been able to find a spec on the screw in jets. Can anyone out their verify that my idle jets are to large thus causing my rich condition? Any suggestions on were to get new screw-in idle jets. Thanks for the help.
