STARTER REMOVAL HELP

Postby stevenstrack » Fri Mar 18, 2011 3:51 pm

I looking for any help in removing the starter from a 1983 GL1100I. I can get as far as backing the starter out of the engine (this is actually moving the starter forward), but the gear that goes into the sproket will not clear the engine to allow me to pull the starter out. I tried dropping the exhaust, removing the shifter, and taking off the engine guard and still can't get the darn thing out. I tried on the stand (scary for a few minutes) and on the side stand still no luck. I think the inboard stud for the exhaust may need to be removed but it's pretty rusty and i'm afraid it might snap off inside and i'll have worse problems. Does anyone have any suggestions on the "removal"? I'm just lacking between 1/8" - 3/32". I can't see where the instructions for this say to tip back and rotate out or whatever because i've tried it all and it no workie. I'd gladly buy someone a beer that can get this thing out for me! HELP!! :x

Hello,
You need to remove the one stud. That will give you what you need to get it out. Try spaying it with blaster and let sit over night. And then try it again. Hope this helps :)

I have a 1981 Gl1100I and have had the starter out several times and never had to pull the stud. I would wait to see the response from others before you pull the stud. Do you have the nut off because many times the stud comes out with the nut and your problem would be over. Don't read the manual because it tells you you have to pull the engine. Be careful not to drop the sprocket off the chain. Good Luck!!
