gl1100 ignition units melting ??

Postby jasperfree » Sun Mar 20, 2011 5:35 am

on my latest project 1980 gl 1100 , there was a dark tar like substance on front timming belt cover area , i traced it to the transistor ignition units , both had plastic melting , however was still running , i replaced them with a set off a gl500 and it runs well , i,m now pulling the motor to do a stator change and i'm wondering if anyone has had this problem before , thanks , gary

Fill them with epoxy and let them dry, then put them back on the bike,be sure they are in the original location on the bike they need air flow, they should mount by the volt regulator on the left side under the tank shelter.

It's a very common problem - the potting compound they used melts after 30 years or so of riding, and you find the resultant mess. The units themselves are functionally unaffected - just do as mentioned, clean them out, fill with epoxy, let it cure, and reinstall for another 30 years.
