The knocking may be un-sync'd carbs

Carb sync on both problems.

Binding cables?? rev up then push on the idle screw don't turn just push if it goes down cables binding or bell housing spring not working correctly. carb synch won't hurt. Other issues sticking slides in the carbs, vaccum leaks,
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

I agree with the cables binding, somethings restricting the movement..

Turn the throttle bellcrank (the part in the picture with cables wrapped around it, and the spring on the end) with your finger, and make sure it is returning to the idle position. If it is, and the RPM is still staying up high, then you've got a problem other than cables binding.
