82 1100I carb sync problem

Postby lbman » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:26 pm

HI all,
OK I have done a lot of work on carbs on Yamaha s' of late..finely had a chance to sync my carbs on gold wing. wow what a hassle . now it is missing on one cylinder on Idle. I kind of think someone might have adjusted one carb to overcome bad Idle mix. now that i have them all synced its showing its nasty little teeth...any Ideas ? so now it looks like i'm on the learning curve for 1100's
also on a budget. Carb kits are Expensive! LOL
the bike has 73,000 on it. I picked it up for 1200 last year looked ruff sat outside but i was able to shine it up pretty well.. ran good , well ok , but growled off the line. I synced the carbs to stop that
Mufflers are shot , any good cheep aftermarket pipes...I am hard of hearing and like fairly noisy. although i know this affects fuel air mix. this is my 1st wing . and i like it ! Rode Harley s for over 20 years . Divorce / child support forces me to ride 30 yr old stuff now. but It was worth every freekin penny! Butt down the road I will prob opt up to the 1800 Wing....Crotch Rocket with Bags I am told.
I'm a 54 yr old KID
thanks

I fought with a gl11001 with carb problems for a while. Then I went back to the basics.Fuel mixture, spark and compression. With the 4 carb system,ALL must be close to each other or it just won't run smooth.I found uneven compression was causing my headache. It would idle OK but flutter above an idle,Re-Adjust,now it revs OK but won't idle.It was madding. The compression was::125-145-155-100.The factory specs call for no more than 4-5 lbs difference between cylinders.I re-ringed it,155 across the board.Idle is smooth and acceleration doesn't rattle.Sync carbs by the how to guide found on this fine site.

Can't speak for the 1100 but I synced my buddies 1000 and it made a world of difference. Even HE was inpressed. It took a while to get them right but I did it.

I'll check compression this weekend. Just cause! It's just starting to become riding season here and with the gas $ I need to ride my WING more than ever. Rain or Shine.
I will remove the trim pieces to make it easyier to get at lock nut on adj. screws. I might take off carbs and blow them out. bike was sitting for 3 months with Premium gas in it.
last fall i synced a xj650 Yamaha worked great after that. sold it to a buddy to get my wing. Put 3,000 miles on the wing. tell weather went to hell. I just finished syncing the carbs on another xj700 . It helped big time but iI found a bad float stand on 2nd carb so I have to replace that carb and rebuild it! Then I can get his bike out of MY WAY !!!~
I'll give it one more chance before, "OFF COME THE CARBS" But I got that funny feeling.
and some not so good luck.

Checking compression is one place to start. Proper compression is with engine at operating temp and throttle wide open and all plugs removed. What kind of vacumn is she pulling when trying to sync ?

If it has been sitting I would drain all the gas and refill with fresh 87 octane. Add a half can of Seafoam and ride it. After that tank of gas see if there is any difference.
Also check for vacumn leaks.

I was pleased with vacuum . I will adjust valves this weekend 1st. previous owner as well as myself run Marvels Mystery Oil in gas.
I will check for vac. leaks as well. the last thing i want to do is pull the carbs.
I also need to remove fairing this weekend ABS and a can of ABS cement , I also have a new heat gun so I'm gonna try my hand at ABS Repair. done a bunch of research on line about that too..
.geezz does it ever quit !
I am never going to get to getting my 1963 Dodge Power Wagon Ambulance running at this rate. too busy working on M/Cycles.

well the 2nd run at it was a huge success. I nailed it in about ten min. I figured I had the Idle too high. was bypassing Idle jets circuit a bit..touchy little buggers. I can not believe the difference it made. Bike starts cold with a touch of the button. runs smooth all the way up. gave it a hard run to freeway on ramp. sounded like a turbo. of course when I hit my lane on I-5, I screamed right up next to WA.State Patrol. "WASP" he Eyeballed me a bit but Didn't sting me. LOL
Now it's on to removing the seat cover and re stitching, cover is ok but stitching is coming out.
I also have problems with fairing on right side wanting to fall apart. anywhere there is a screw it cracked! I have picked up a sheet of ABS Plastic and a can of cement. I figure to reinforce it from behind sand it down and paint it.. We will see how that works.
I don't have a heated shop anymore or this would BE DONE !
thanks for all the help.
this is a great group indeed!
