neutral light switch

Postby nascar7613 » Thu Mar 31, 2011 1:19 pm

I am looking for the neutral light switch for a 1982 GL1100. It must have been disconnected when I had some work done on the bike, it worked prior to that. Anyway, if someone knows where it is located I'd appreciate that info.

The 82 neutral switch is behind(kinda)the oil filter. Its buried behind the front engine cover. It's more likely that the wire was not re-attached.It's routed on the right side of the block and the matching plug is near the top of the radiator.Does your light stay on or is it always off?

Have a look at How to remove and replace your water pump, starting at step 74, and you'll see exactly where it is, what it looks like, and how to remove/replace it.

Being off all the time means that the wire from the neutral light is not being grounded by the switch. Its either unplugged at the top of the radiator,a cut wire going to the top of the front engine cover or a mis-aligned(bad)switch.I'd start first by locating the one or two wires that exit the front cover. They are at the top right and route up to the top of the radiator. If it's one wire, short it to ground to turn on the light.I did have a wing that had 2 wires.one for the neutral light and one for the OD light.

As suggested, locate the neutral switch and then short the wire to the frame or battery -ve terminal and see if the neutral light comes on (Obviously turn the ignition on first). If it does light up then the neutral switch is at fault (Dirty or incorrectly aligned), if it doesn't then it s a broken wire/bad contact between the bulb and the Neutral switch.

I did find that the neutral light switch was just unplugged. Plugged it in and she lit up. Thank you guys for all your help in locating the problem.

any chance you could show the connection under the false tank for the neutral light? The one everyone says is responsible for getting disconnected?
I have an 82 gl1100 standard and I too am suffering from the neutral light not turning on.
