GL 1100 leaks oil from the "Weep Hole"

Postby Smokey66 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 8:36 am

A while back I noticed oil in the water tank. After checking the weep hole on the bottom of the front cover and finding it pluged with trash,I cleaned it out.Now I'm losing oil here.No water just oil. After a 50 mile ride the bottom of the engine is a little wet and after putting the bike on the center stand after the ride, about a half teaspoon of oil ran out of the hole.No overheating,no water loss, but could it still be the waterpump?OR could it be that because the spring that sits in front of the oil filter is missing(? just not there)that oil is getting around the filter and somehow collecting/pressurizing the front cover and causing the leak?Whats the spring for anyway?Previous owner lost/discarded/didnt care about it.Hope someone can help!

OK, you've got two problems.

The first is your missing spring. This spring pushes your oil filter against the engine block, to ensure that the oil actually goes through the filter. If this spring is missing, as soon as the engine starts up, the oil pressure will push the filter away from the block, and the oil will flow AROUND the filter, instead of through it. So basically, your engine is running with NO oil filter. That spring is a crucial part!

The spring has nothing to do with your second problem, which is one or both of your water pump oil seals.

Either the internal (bearing) or external (O-ring) oil seals on your water pump has failed. Because your weep hole was plugged, the engine oil pressure pushed the leaking oil past one or both of the water seals on the water pump, contaminating your coolant with oil. Now that you have cleared the weep hole, the oil that leaks past the oil seal(s) now comes out the weep hole (like it should) instead of forcing its way into the coolant.

Because the spring is missing on your oil filter, the oil pressure - which would normally be mitigated by being forced through the filter media - is going to be higher. This could have caused the oil seal failure on the water pump - but you could also have two unrelated problems. In either case, both problems will have to be addressed.

I'd take it out and have a look at it first - it very well might just be the O-rings around the pump, and the pump could be in perfect shape.

Put the spring and the washer(yes theres a washer in there too,its between the spring and the filter)And see there, no more oil out of the weep hole!Engine and trans sound different now too.Hope I didn't hurt anything riding it like that(approx, 1000 miles).Time will tell...............
