Postby bais » Sat Apr 09, 2011 7:34 pm

Hello everyone, hears my question. Just bought a 1981 gl1100. Head gasket was blown I took it apart and cleaned pressure tested head and replaced check gears and timing mark according to the manual, it wont start, checked plugs, timing mark, checked to see if getting fuel, it still won't start any suggestions.

With the plugs out of the heads do you get spark at all 4 plugs? Is the kill switch on the bars set to run? Did it run before you fixed it? It has to be something simple, we just need a little more info.

Yes there was a spark on each plug, the kill switch was on and it ran before I took it apart. The confusing thing is the manual with the marking for the timing in the book its upside down from the way it looks on the engine, also when lining up the pulleys what mark do you go by the arrow or the mark on the pulley. I don't know if this is the problem but we tried all different positions using the different markings nothing has worked so far. It sounded several times like it wanted to start but would not turn over.

Did you put the O-Rings back on the intake runners ? Double check your belts,And ALWAYS turn the engine over by hand before you start the engine ,If it is out of time you can bend a valve or break a piston. With the spark plugs out it should turn by hand freely at least two complete turns,If it stops it is not right DO NOT FORCE IT.

Marks only work one way the little arrow on the cam wheel have to match up with mark on the side of the cam case..note if you turned the main crank while you had the heads off you have to reset everything..otherwise it will never be right. Main crank/bearings have to be in synch with the cams/heads/valves. If you are sure it in synch you could try squirting some starter fluid or gas into the air box..lid off..to see if it's a fuel delivery problem. But as stater above if you crank her and she's out of synch you can bend a valve or hole a piston.

Should look like this..
