Coolant overflowing when cold.

Postby nickgroves0308 » Mon Apr 11, 2011 9:52 am

Hello all, I have an 82' GL1100 that I'm having a small issue with. I recently filled my coolant reservoir after noticing it was completely empty. Now when I start the bike coolant runs out of the overflow hose with the bike cold. I didn't over fill the reservoir or anything. It's pushing all the coolant out and completely draining the reservoir tank each time I start the bike. It does appear to have some minor corrosion in the radiator and could use to be flushed. Could it be a clog in the radiator itself or a faulty thermostat, or what...???

Thanks in advance.

If you don't do anything to the reservoir (leave it empty), then start the bike, does any coolant then go up into the reservoir as it warms up?

Have you had a look at the coolant level in the radiator (take the cap off) before you start the bike?

It could be a faulty radiator cap - instead of holding the pressure like it is supposed to, it could be letting the coolant go up into the reservoir, so there is never any pressure in the cooling system.

It could also be that your head gasket has failed, this allows the engine to pressurise the cooling system and force all the coolant out. I would suggest running a compression check on your engine, it will be fairly obvious if the head gasket has failed from your compression readings.

The radiatior remains full. It seems to be draining the coolant reservoir only and flowing out of the overflow tube. As to the reservoir filling upon warming, it does not seem to fill at all. The bike has never over heated and the oil doesn't look like coolant has mixed into it.

Question: When should the reservoir be filled to the full line? When the bike is HOT or COLD?
