12V Power Outlet

Postby rjbrownley » Fri Apr 15, 2011 8:51 pm

I would like to add a 12V power outlet to my 83 GL1100 Interstate. Has anyone done this and if so, how did you install it?

I don't have an 1100 but did do the same on my 1500. Installed two of them actually. I used a power plate from Electrical Connection and wired the 12 volt outlets to it. Finding a location for the outlet is the fun part.

I put one on mine on the left side of the fairing, right above my left storage pocket. directly behind the left turn signal. If you remove the left turn signal and left pocket, you can easily access the area. You can connect it to the accessory terminal, which will make it switched, or you can connect it directly to your battery (using an line fuse!!! as close to the battery as possible), which will make it live all the time whether or not the bike is switched on.

I used a cheap Wal-mart outlet that had an integral waterproof cap that could be removed when you wanted to use it. It wasn't more than a few dollars, and I've been using it for years with no problems.
