Front head gasket leaking....

Postby tallman21 » Mon Apr 18, 2011 1:05 pm

So brought it down to a guy to help get the bike running right. He noticed the front left head gasket is leaking bad. He said it isn't worth fixing as the whole engine would probably need to be rebuilt. Any ideas? i dont really have any money to dump into this bike.

Really? Whole engine needs to be rebuilt because of a leaky head gasket? Sounds more to me like he just doesn't want to do the head gasket job.

is it a nasty process? Well heres the deal, there was deff some oil running out from the front left and there is some white smoke coming out the left muffler. I never noticed the leak before tho.... which is weird cause i completely cleaned the bike. i also never noticed the white smoke either....

If i can get new seals and rebuild it myself i will i just have no idea how or how long it would take me. thats the only problem. The bike is soo close to runnign on the road.

Sounds like he's trying to sell you a rebuild. Put a new gasket in it and keep riding. It's not that bad of a job. An 8 hr job maybe. 12 if you plan on drinking a case and BS'ing while you do it.

First thing I would do is get under there and make sure the oil is leaking from the head gasket. Then make sure the white smoke is coolant and not just the normal smoke at start up. All the old Wings smoke at start up if left on the side stand. Also smoke could be from excessive fuel from the carbs if the petcock was left on and the fuel got into the combustion chamber. Coolant smoke will smell like antifreeze.
