Engine starting problem

Postby yoland » Wed Apr 20, 2011 3:24 pm

Ok this is what i did during the winter on my bike, i have change the timming belt did also a valve timming ,change the plugs, rebuilt one of the camshaft , bought a new Randar gas pump, change the air filter, change the oil and filter, rebuilt the brake front and rear..etc.. the engine just have 39 klic on it . When you try to start it, everthing is turning normaly and i have fire on the plug but it does not start... i followed everything the way you explain it on this site  i know you are going to tell me to kleen my carburators but it was done last year...any other suggestions ...sorry about the spelling

Three basic things MUST happen for a cylinder to fire.First:enough fuel to air mixture(14 to 1).Second:compressing the mixture to at least 100 psi.Third:igniting the compressed mixture at the right time(near TDC).With that said, check the basics.Compression:expect 145psi,open throttle, each cylinder.Enough fuel in the carb bowls.Open a drain screw and capture the fuel.About a small shot glass full. While the plugs are out, hook them all on and lay on the block, crank it over and verify a good hot spark on the plug.Unless wires at the coil have been messed with, timing should be no problem.

Unfortunately you changed many things.. Are you 100% sure you have the valve timing correct?
What do you mean by rebuilt one of the cam shafts? Did you change the cam shaft or just set valve clearances?
Have you opened a drain screw on the carburetor float bowl to make sure there is fuel inside the carbs? If you fitted a new pump, it may be that there is an air lock or the system needs to be primed before it will pump fuel? Opening a drain screw will let us know that you are getting fuel to the carbs. I do not believe the air filter, oil filter or brake work will have any effect on your engine. If it worked before you changed the camshaft, timing belt and fuel pump, it is likely that you have either missed connecting or incorrectly connected some wires together, incorrectly timed the cam shaft or are not getting fuel to the carbs.

Try putting a small container underneath the carbs and open a drain screw and see if fuel comes out of the carb. If yes then we can assume you have gas (Could still be a blocked carb!), so either wrong valve timing or damaged valve gear.. Do you have access to a compression tester? If the valve timing was incorrect you may have bent a valve which would cause a lack of compression and make it hard to start.. But before we panic, lets check the basics, fuel, spark and compression.. You verified spark, lets check fuel and compression.

The camshaft was just rebuilt on the top where it makes the rpm and pump work great job by a pro . And yes i doo have gas because the plugs smell or have gas on them. The compression sims ok but i will have to check . I do have some small backfire..

Your reply makes it sound like you have fuel, spark and compression.. If all 3 are there and it's not running, then something is occurring at the wrong time, this comes back to my first question, are you sure you have timed the camshafts correctly? As you have not touched the electrical side the spark timing should not have changed so I would suspect the camshaft is incorrectly timed..

No they do not.The wires cross.I'll look at mine to get you which wire goes to which plug.Someone else may know off the top of their head.
