Speed Sensor

Postby bobbo52 » Fri Apr 29, 2011 1:03 pm

Hello all, I have an 83 apsencade with the digital speedometer and it has quit working. Anyone out there have a speed sensor that they want to sale? Honda no longer make a replacement part for this year. Thanks and have a great day.

Hi Bobbo52, This doesn't sound like a speed sensor issue (speedometer not working) . I
would look into this a bit more and determine whether there is some type of problem
with your ignition wiring or connections. If you've already researched this problem, then
you may have found the issue your looking at, but I personally don't think so. My own
speed sensor is malfunctioning on an 85 1200 LTD. The computer lights- give me that code.
What lights are on for your ECU. (computer...under the rear seating area)

The 83 gl1100 Aspencade speed sensor uses a electronic(FET)magnetic pulse detector system. There are 3 wires.Ground,5 vdc provided by the lcd circuit, and a pulsing(0-5vdc when turning the wheel)return wire to the spedo display. The voltages are approximate. When a spedo quits,it may be as simple as the mechanism is no longer turning with the wheel(a worn connector tab).A bit of cleaning, adjustment and lube can often fix them.Sometimes it's as simple as a bad connection to or from the sensor.A simple dvm will tell what's wrong.

tks. virgilmobile....

I'll check this out this spring as my 85 LTD 1200 is still on the 'fritz'. I'm thinking its the speed sensor,
per the computer ECU lights as well as other commentary from other Wingers.

thanks for the suggestion . I'll keep this in mind and check out what your saying re: testing etc.

All the best,
Al
