Oil check in window, unsure of reading.

Postby stangrant » Sun May 01, 2011 6:03 pm

Hi,
1982 GL1100 with an oval level window.

My issue is that damn oil level window. Cleaned the outside of it. I did the wiper. Used a flashlight.
I can't tell where the oil level is with the bike on the center stand.
The only time I saw an indication or oil line, was when it was leaning over on the side stand. Leaning left. So I assume it brought the right side oil level down which caused it to show.
So does this mean my bike is over filled (I suspect) if I can't see a level when it's on the stand or under filled?
Tried shaking the bike while on the center stand but saw nothing.

Thanks, Stan

I had the same problem. I knew i had the right amount because I just did an oil change. I checked the window again the other day and i could see the oil clearly. did you just do an oil change or is it older oil? The reason im asking is because I think the reason i didn't see it before was because the oil was much more clear then after it has run through the engine some and taken on that typical black color.

This could be it or not. Im sure one of the more tech savy guys will help out

Thanks for your reply.
I will have to ask the previous owner when the last change was done. Did you see the difference in you level with the bike leaning on the side stand?

Yea make sure it is on its center stand. I would check it when its cold then check it after you have run it. Possibly the oil needs to pool down some before you check?

Couldn't find a post on adding a dipstick. Sent a message to Wingadmin.

If you can clearly see the oil line on the side stand, but not on the center stand, then yes, it's overfilled. You should be able to clearly see it on the center stand, and it should be on the center stand when you check it.
