1983 GL1100A Clarion II locked on 87.9?

Postby j.hawes » Tue Sep 29, 2009 6:34 pm

Greetings all!

I fired up my trusty GL1100A commuter this morning, and found my radio apparently locked at the frequency 87.9 FM. I push the manual tune buttons without any change. I have removed the entire control unit from the motorcycle, and still not change when reinstalled.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your time and expertise!

Do any of the other buttons still work correctly?

No other tuning or Adj/Me buttons works but the clock button, and then it only works when the clock is turned off.

You could try to see if a connector inside the fairing has come loose or is corroded...but I suspect you're going to have to talk to the folks at Sierra-MC - they're the only people that still repair these radios. However, they're very good, and normally repair them for a flat rate of $100.

Strangely, I just had the same problem on my 1983 Aspencade. My Clarion 1 radio was locked to one station and only the clock worked when the radio was off. I could not change from AM to FM or move to any other channel.
The problem was found after taking the radio control unit apart, right down to the circuit board. The switches that are activated when depressing the manual scan buttons had failed and were in a permanently closed position. If you decide to take the control unit apart, you can easily identify the failed button(s) because it no longer returns when pressed. Unfortunately, you have to take the control unit apart to find the bad switch as the outer buttons have their own return springs and this makes finding the underlying bad switch impossible from the out side.

My radio worked fine just a few days ago, then this problem. I had two failed switches, one under the memory button and one under the lower manual tuning button.

My fix is temporary, as I removed the two offending switches and moved another good one to the memory position (some soldering and desoldering required) My next job is to find new switches. I put the control unit back together and presto it worked.

If any one has a lead on where to get new switches, I would appreciate hearing from them. I have emailed Sierra-MC.

Can you take a picture of the switches and post it? I have been looking at a lot of switches at work. You can look online at DigiKey and Mouser, they both have pretty good online catalogs for electronics parts.

I was going to recommend Digi-key as well. I have used them to replace switches of that type before, and they have a dazzling array of different types available.

That said, when my buttons got "stuck" and wouldn't tune the radio anymore, the problem was an old, worn-out capacitor inside the tuner box itself, and had nothing to do with the actual buttons.

Okay, I have called Sierra-MC, and for only $100.00 ($85.00 plus $15.00 return shipping) I am going to ship it out. All I have to do is ship them the tuner and control head. Now, since I have never installed one, which one of the many components in my fairing is the tuner? ( I noticed that is not covered by any of the excellent How-To articles. Thanks, BTW, cause they have already helped me!)

Thanks CapnDenny1 for the input. I am looking at digi-key now and will post pictures of the old switches with rough dimensions. (i should say that I will try posting pictures, never did it before)

CapnDenny1, Here is the image of the circuit board showing the momentary switches and the two that are broken. The switches solder through the board with two pins, 5mm separation. The switches standoff the board 6.5mm in height and the case is 6.5mm square.

Sorry, I could not figure out how to get a picture in this post but downloaded the pictures to Member Pictures, Giffen49. Let me know if you have seen any thing like these.

Thanks

If you plug that board into the radio, plug it in, can you operate the radio by shorting out the two pins in the switch? Doing so should make the radio operate as if the switch was pressed. That will tell you if the problem is the actual switch, or something inside the radio.

This looks pretty close

It is an E-Switch part number TL59AF100Q.

This part is only 5mm tall, but they may work for you? I think you said there was another button pushing on this one? It also comes with a 7 mm height, but DigiKey doesn't have any of those in stock. Just type that in for the part number search on DigiKey and it will pull it up for you. They are $0.38 each, so you may want to replace all of them? That way all the buttons would feel the same, but maybe 1.5mm is close enough you won't be able to tell? It does have the 5mm lead spacing that you need.

Let me know if that may work for you? $0.38 sure beats $100.

Thanks a bunch. These should work just fine as I can fabricate a plastic spacer to raise the height to the right level before soldering. It will be important that they are firmly seated as the outer button and finger pressure could possibly be damaging if the seating or height are off.
I'll keep you informed as how this worked.

Someone mentioned shorting these switches to test which switch is the problem, this may or may not work. When the switch fails it actually breaks internally and shorts the circuit, this is what freezes the radio. If the radio is frozen on one channel and still operates I believe one or more of the switches has shorted. The offending switch can easily be found once the control unit is disassembled as it will not spring back once pressed.

Thanks again for all the input and help on this subject.

I installed the two new switches from DigiKey and they work great. I will test the radio over the next few weeks and then replace all the switches. I used a 6X6 mm piece of perforated circuit board as backing to gain the extra 1.5mm in height. Thanks again for the help.

I had the same problem explained in the thread. I ordered 10 (EG456CT-ND) switches from Digi-key. Cost is 2.55 + shipping.
Using a small iron and a solder sucker I replaced all the switches as none seemed to be working. It takes only a few minutes.
SUCCESS. The radio works fine and tunes all stations and will program them on FM only. Am doesn't work, just a whistle, but I'm satisfied with FM stations. These switches have a taller button which makes them 7mm total height. There is no need for a spacer to placed under them. Easy fix.

My radio is stuck on 108.0 and will play on that station but the stations are stuck. It will change between AM/FM. I was wondering how to get the tuning knobs off the shafts to be able to pull the unit out the back. I didn't want to just pry on them and mess them up. Any help would be appreciated.

I looked on the DigiKey web site and couldn't find the 7mm switch as listed above with part number EG456CT-ND. The part number I came up with is EG4566CT-ND. They are listed as "Switch Tact Radial." I think there was a 6 omitted on the original post by 10iron. If I am wrong please let me know. I hope this helps anybody looking for them.

I think you are correct about that part number.
Thanks for the correction.
Does anyone have any schematics for the Clarion II system.
I've got the manual but I'm looking for the schematics for the radio.
My radio worked for about a week after I replaced the switches, then quit. I get audio (just noise) from speakers but no frequency display.
No change in frequency is noted. The CB appears to work but I havn't actually talked to anyone with it.
The only thing I did was key the transmitter while trying out the CB.
The next time I turned on the radio no stations or frequency display.

I haven't ever seen a manual for the Clarion II. Most people send their units off to Sierra Electronics, who normally fix them regardless of the problem, for a $100 flat fee.

Thanks, everyone for the great input!

My wife and I just bought a 1993 GL1100A with the radio stuck on 87.9. I took the radio module out, disassembled it and used contact cleaner to clean out the micro-switches. I put it all back together and it works great! :P

Now I have to get a few other 'bugs' worked out on it! :(

Happy riding!
