Couple of weird noises-1980 GL

Post by aussie280z » Tue May 03, 2011 10:25 pm

I just purchased a 1980 GL 1100. It has 30k miles and I LOVE the bike. It has a few things I am taking care of, but there is a couple things that stump me. The first is that at exactly 65 mph, i get a whine from the front of the bike. It doesn't matter what gear I am in or even have the clutch engaged, the noise starts at 65 and up, and ceases below 65.

The second is that occasionally while slowing down I get a tick from the rear end that corresponds to the speed. It almost sounds like something in the tire, but I cant find anything there. It also goes away if I start to accelerate.

I know these are vague, but any help would be appreciated.

Also, this is my first bike. I researched for months on what to buy with my limited budget and nothing even seemed close to the Gold Wing. I have ridden many bikes and nothing compares to me. I commute 160 miles a day on this 30 year old bike, and it does it with ease. I would love to see a Harley of this age do the same thing.

just for giggles pull the speedo cable from the front wheel and see if the whine goes away, if it does then clean cable in and out, relube, reinstall and enjoy the quiet. What brand of tires on the bike, some tires are known to howl, are the tires Cupped?
Ride safe, Todd
Over night campers welcome
