removal of painted parts so I can paint them

Postby edr421 » Fri Oct 02, 2009 6:15 am

have an 83 interstate and want to remove all the painted parts so I can repaint them this winter. Can the fenders, flaring etc be removed without removing the tires? can a novice do it or would it be better to take it somewhere to have them removed.

Also, can you buy hinges to put on the saddle bag boxes so I don't keep losing the lids when I forget to lock them or the grandkids get into them.

thanks

I know the fenders can be removed without removing the tires. Certainly the saddlebags and trunk can, and the side covers just pop off. The tank can be removed easily as well. The fairing is not an easy thing to remove (lots of wiring to deal with) but it's not impossible either.

As for hinges - what most people have done (and I will do one day when I get time) is to attach two cables (i.e. fishing leaders) to the inside of each lid, and fasten them to the inside of the bag. That way, when you take the lid off, you can just let it hang off the side. They will retain the lid as well, should it come off when riding.
