Replace Clutch on 83 GL1100 Interstate

Postby rockguitar1969 » Thu May 12, 2011 9:03 pm

Hey could anyone give me a run down on the procedure or instructions on how to replace the clutch on a 83 interstate. Or even a scan of the pages from the service manual on how to do it.

Clutch just not working acting like its not there at all will not engage. So I am hopping that it is just the clutch plates that have to be replaced. We shall see when I get it apart. Thank you so very much for the info. I thought I was going to have to pull the motor to get at the damn thing. That is what all of the honda shops in my area were saying and were telling me it was going to run anywhere from 500 dollars to 1200 dollars in labor. But they also didn't have a estimate manual that went that far back. The furthes theres went back was 91 for a 1500cc bike. So this is very good new to me that I might be able to pull off the repair myself.

There's a lot of stuff involved in the drive system.Splined hub on the rear wheel, differential gears, splined drive shaft, etc.I guess I don't understand the "will not engage" comment. Can you clarify what it does?It may not be related to the clutch at all.

It acts like the Clutch lever is Pulled all the time. When you release the Clutch nothing happens. No power is delivered to the rear wheel. I just bought this bike in this condition and am not really should how it was acting before it happened but it was discribed to me that it just all of a sudden failed. right after have an oil change.

Does the clutch lever have good resistance on it or is it verrrry easy to pull.If it's moderately stiff, that's good. It's pulling against the clutch springs. Is it actually going in gear?try 1st AND 2nd gear.Does the shifting lever feel solid and clicks?Centerstand the bike,Pull the rubber boot loose from the block on the drive shaft.roll the wheel and check that the shaft is turning.Does the neutral light go off when you put it in 1st or 2nd?

I can't check the Clutch lever right this second because the Cable was disconnected by the original owner. The shaft is turning.

It just seems odd.I can't imagine a clutch so bad that it won't grab at all.I'm leaning toward It not going in gear. With the shifting lever you should (with the motor off)hear a definite click from the front of the block. That's where the shifting mechanism is,kinda behind the oil filter. It is a definite noise as it moves the gears about.

Put it up on the center stand, start the engine, and while idling, try to click it into first gear. I'm suspecting it may be in neutral, and that's why you're not seeing any motion at the wheel. Even a clutch that is very worn should still couple enough even with just the oil in there to turn the rear wheel if it's in gear, and the rear wheel is off the ground.

That's an odd one! Clutches don't 'suddenly fail' in my experience; they gradually fail over time. Clutch cables can suddenly fail but that doesn't seem to be what's happened here.
If when the rear wheel is turned, it turns the drive shaft AND the engine shaft ie. the universal joint is still intact but there is no turning of the engine, it has to be either
a) it's not engaging gears (most likely),
b) the primary chain has broken (most unlikely but possible. It will make a lot of noise when started if that is the case).
c) the clutch lever mechanism on the clutch case has jammed in the release position.
d) the most unlikely of all; the primary reduction gears have stripped.

I would imagine that you already solved the clutch problem but if you haven't then this may help. I just purchased a 84 1200 and had a similar problem. This machine sat for an extended period of 4+ years. There are many issues. Carbs done and it runs great. The clutch wouldn't grab enough to move the bike. So after giving it some thought we bleed the master cylinder. Something was stuck internally that bleeding freed up. I rebuild transmissions and the clutch looks just like an automatic transmission clutch pack that I would consider extremely durable in this application.

Hey, we all do that from time to time.
My old boss years ago had a sign on the wall of his office - 'Please ensure brain is engaged before releasing mouth!'

I think I might print that one out and stick it on my monitor! :D

You also said the clutch cable was removed by prior owner? I would reattach the cable first. when bike is started (I am assuming you have engine running) can you verify if bike is in gear at all?
There are people here that may be able to help but alot more info is needed. and bike has to be complete and ready to test.

When you got this bike had it been stored for a long time? what was the oil condition? If the bike had been stored long enough and no oil or low oil the plates could have dried out I am questioning if that may be a possibility?

I would attempt the repair myself. Trust me the repair will be much easier than you expect. Honda's are usually easy to work on. I doubt the plates are burnt. Something is probably stuck.
