GL1100 1982 rebuild - need help

Postby jaetwa » Tue May 17, 2011 5:02 am

Greetings all, I have some issues with my restoration project.
In nutshell, new timing belt (as per DYI), full rebuild of carbs (using Randall’s kit) and still no luck getting engine running idle.
Engine starts with one turn (on choke) and run very rough. RMP vary between 1000 and 3000.
Closing choke cause engine to stop. I also noticed white smoke coming from cylinder when spark plug is removed.
White smoke from pipes, knocking noise (backfiring) in engine and vibration.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Regards

If it's knocking and back firing, your timing (valve or spark) is probably wrong. As you changed the timing belt, my first fear would be that you have not timed the camshafts correctly.. Are you running points or an electronic ignition? I am not familiar with the 81 GL1100.

I found 3 out of 4 idle fuel flow channels blocked. Will do ultrasound cleanup tomorrow.
Timing belts are OK, checked couple of times. I'm not familiar with spark distribution system on my bike yet, that will be next step.
White smoke seems to be related to excessive fuel (full choke) since smoke was rising up. My first fear was coolant in cylinders - head gasket issue. Only this type of "glycol" white smoke goes down to the floor. Also one of idle adjustment screw is broken somehow (top needle part).
Hopefully I will find out tomorrow :)

1100 is electronic. Points disappeared with the GL1000.

Did you pull and clean the idle jets they have side ports which can't be cleaned in place? Have you tried spraying propane, starter fluid, WD40 around the intakes..to see if you have air leak, you can buy a replace air screw(really fuel screw)..check Randakk's site for a cheaper replacement..from a Kawasaki I think, have you synched the carbs, checked compression,
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

i was able to free up all (i hope) idle channels - when injecting fuel (syringe) I'm getting flow in to four small hols (next to each other in square pattern), hole for idle screw and channel in vac cut-off on the site of carb. Are they any more points?
my plans are to put all together (again) tonight and test assuming that i will get carbs from ultrasound cleanup. for suction testing - what is the best way to accomplish that?
I have new idle needle all ready (from old CB650 carb - they're the same)
