82 GL 1100 clicking relay/ where is it?

Postby bobtail18 » Fri May 20, 2011 9:02 pm

I have a serious short circuit. It doesn't blow any of the six fuses in the false tank area, but I hear a relay clicking like mad around the fork/behind the speedo area. I have no head light now, but where is this relay? Do I need to remove the fairing? Im the guy that posted in an earlier post with the picture of the rigged toggle switch in the headlight circuit. And thank you admin for leading me at least in the right direction. I did clean out the start switch like you advised but I think the trouble is at that relay, or at least I need to get to it to find the short. Everything was working fine until I took the forks off and did new seals and progressive springs, and I think I either bumped something but there is s big time short. Do I need to remove the fairing to get to it?

Well, truth be known, the 1100 does not use any relays other than the starter relay. If something is chattering behind the instruments it's either a add-on or a mad cricket. :D I use 3 foot of 1/4 inch hose stuck in my ear to pinpoint odd noises. It sounds like you have a butchered job.One of those"hook up something to get it to work instead of fixing the problem scenario".If you need help with wiring, someone should be able to get you what you need to get it right.

There is the turn signal buzzer back in there - could it be that? My money is on a PO "custom install" however.

Try pulling fuses one at a time.start with turn signal fuse, then accessory fuse..may give you a starting point for your hunt. removing the false tank gives you access to most of the electrical stuff..your noise maybe be in there..

I vote for shorter turn signal buzzer

There is a relay for the self cancelling turn signals, possibly the problem.

I'm not aware of any relay for the self-canceling turn signal. There is a solenoid in the left switch assembly that releases the turn switch, but it is powered directly from the canceler module. There is that turn signal buzzer(mine is long gone)but it should only buzz at the same time as the turn signals flash.

Were always thinking of possible scenarios. :?: It's kinda tough when we can't eyeball it up close  .Troubleshooting from a distance is usually a crap-shoot anyway  .sometimes we just get lucky.

At least we try to help,Virgil
