Changing timing belts..how to?

Postby fireguy » Thu Oct 08, 2009 3:35 pm

I have to change the timing belts on my '82 GL1100 Interstate. Can this be done without removing the engine from the frame? If so is it just a matter of removing the rad? Looks like there is lots of room on one side but tight on the other. Belts are original and I can't let them go another season.

Anyone give me a heads up with this!

Absolutely. I didn't think to document the process when I did mine, but it is not all that difficult, and you don't have to remove the engine. It's easier to remove the radiator to do it, but it's not imperative - I suggest you do remove it if you value the skin on your knuckles, however. :)

When I do mine next (probably another year) I'll write up a how-to pictorial to add to my collection here. In the meantime, here's a really good tutorial on the Steve Saunders site.

Thanks...really helpful. You guys are the best! I think i might take that one on by myself...was great to get the belt #'s...priced them and thats an inexpensive way to buy them.
I'll let you know how I made out.

I got the belts changed and replaced the tension springs and rollers while I was at it. The tutorial you referenced wingman was just the thing. I got it all back together and it runs better than ever. It seems that problem I had with the engine "surging" on warm up has gone away as well.

Thanks for all the help!
