Headlight on GL 1100i 1981

Postby Michael DC » Thu May 26, 2011 2:15 pm

Hi all of you
Have a problem with my headlight. I'm sure some of you have a hint or two, which I could benefit from.
When I activate the light switch to first position, (position light), it turns on. Next position which is normal beam then nothing happens. When I activate headligt dimmer switch for High beam - nothing happens.
When I then press the button, (next to the headligt dimmer switch), which beam up the headlight to high beam (only when pressed down), the high beam turns on.
This means that bulb is good.
Thought that it could be the relay, but have some diffyculties to identify it.
Any good advice, will be highly appreciated.

Regards from Denmark
Michael

Well this is different. It sounds like the Euro switch design is different than the US version(the added button for high beam flash). The basic wiring should be the same.I suspect that the high beam flash button it simply tied across the normal high beam switch.
Look at the wiring diagram below.you'll find that a fuse feeds power to the starter switch. When off,it passes the power to the high/low beam switch. It goes directly to the headlight from there.
By your description of the problem,it looks like the high/low beam switch needs to be disassembled and cleaned.
Test the switch first with a test light probe.
If you take the switch apart,be careful,it does have some small springs in there.
after cleaning the contacts, spread the springs apart just a little.
I use grease to hold the parts in place when I reassemble it.

Thx. Virgilmobile. I will have a look at the switch when I return home from my job. (At sea).
The diagram is a good help. Thx.
