Postby yoland » Thu May 26, 2011 8:04 pm

My 1100 would rattle the bad from 900-1800 rpm.A real good carb sync cured it.

Yup ,sounds like the "famous" primary chain rattle, synch the carbs and it will quiet right down. Easy to do too.

Some options,Quad mercury set about $60 bucks+shipping.OR the cheap way.
I bought 2 from harbor freight.$14 each.I soon realized that mechanical gauges don't read exactly the same. What I did was remove the bezel, blacked out the numbers,"T" connected them together,Pulled a vacuum by mouth(It' easy to draw 10" vacuum).and marked each one in small increments up to about 10''.I don't care what the vacuum is,only that the gauges read exactly the same.

Step 2.I cut apart the "T: fitting and threaded it into the right side ports(Phillips screw on the tubes)
I added a fish tank valve about 2" from the fitting and 2 more feet to the gauge. The valve is adjusted so the needle just wiggles when at 1000 rpm.*******<<<that's important :geek:
You adjust the front right carb to match the vacuum in the rear.
Readjust the idle to 1000 rpm.
Move both gauges to the left side.Set them the same by adjusting the front carb.
Leave the gauge on the rear and move the other gauge to the right rear
readjust idle to 1000 rpm
Adjust left side to the right side with the left rear adjuster, and Wa La it's done.

It's most important that the vacuum be as close as possible for all cylinders near 1000-1200 rpm as this is where it imbalance is most noticeable. I've added a pix for a visual aid

where in Canada are you? If you were not far from me I could bring my guages over and we could do them over a frosty beverage or two.

thanks to this site and the input from everyone. i had a terrible knocking and would barely idle. this was after a basic carb cleaning. after someone here told me to keep after the carbs & having tried the seafoam to see if that helped. after no improvement, pulled the carbs again & did a better job of cleaning the jets & found the o-rings in the idle jets were all messed up & in various states. also, one idle port was mostly clogged. used pb blaster & my compressor to free that up. found a site that would sell just the idle o-rings & for about 12.00 including shipping i was back in business. couldn't believe the difference those little things made. now idling very nicely & looking forward to the next phases. front brakes next. seat & backrest upholstry rebuild & some repainting where it looks like brake fluid has left it's mark. i'm looking forward to riding this, but i estimate it won't be til next year before it's fully ready. it is great therapy though, bringing it back to life.

Sounds like a road trip is in order... you can stop by my garage on the way... for a Big Rock.

I too was victim to "low rpm knock". finally got the carb kit from randal and installed after cleaning them. before this, i had a 2100 rpm idle before the knocking started. anyway, after the install, started it up, still knocking. (dang it to heckwhats going on?) ohhhhhhh time to sync: rite side good, left side low, reset 2-4 combo then rite to left. walllaaahh!! purrs soooo smooth at 950.
still got a flat spot on acceleration and sounds like its starving. changing the fuel filter again soon, bad tank

A flat spot may be the vacuum advance not working.
