Starter Relay only clicks

Postby dph03 » Thu May 26, 2011 8:59 pm

I have a new battery. All connections look clean. Lights all look good. The relay only clicks. Can they test it right at the parts store to be sure it is the problem before I buy one? Approximate cost?

Take your test light.Probe the large wire that is bolted to the starter post.Push the starter button. If it lights there , the starter is bad(rebuild it).
If the light does not light , go to the relay and test both studs, one is battery hot , the other is switched on when the start button is pushed.
If it's got battery power but not switched power to the starter then replace it.
A aftermarket starter relay can be used but some re-wiring is in store. Not a bad idea to replace the dogbone fuse anyways.

Yes, it appears to be the starter. I did what you said, tested it at the starter. When I hit the start button, I got plenty of volts. I guess I have to look up how to rebuild starter. The manual said the motor need to be removed. Comments?
Thanks for your reply.

Well if the starter doesn't work now, what's the harm in ripping that little darling apart and see what makes it tick.I found one starter that had stuck brushes.Just cleaned it up and lubed it.
