I cannot get the starter back in on the cog.

Postby dph03 » Sat May 28, 2011 8:44 pm

I got my starter out, rebuilt it, tested it and I can't believe it work!! Great how to, thanks! I cannot get the starter back in on the cog. I got 1 bolt back in but it just won't snap all the way in. Any ideas? Bump the starter? Spin the motor?

It has to go in but don't force it otherwise the housing will break. Try twisting thed starter motor a bit. It is probobly just not guite lined up. Just don't force it.

I removed the starter on my 81 twice, some guys say to place the bike on the side stand, I'm backwards most the time an did not, I left the bike on the centerstand and had no problem lineing the gear up or getting the chain on the sprocket, just hold your mouth right  ...and like someone said don't force anything....

It also can stick on the "O"ring ,I use a little moly grease on it.I can usually stab it in with a bit of wiggling.

YES!! I got it in. It's working, most of the time. A couple times it only clicked so I kick started it. About 40 starts and 3 or 4 no starts. I think the screw connection could use a soddering.
I did put it on the side stand. That may have help. I did apply a little pressure to the back of the starter by lightly prying with my rachet. I could not get a good grip. it was Sunday, today is thursday, all is well.
Thanks, Great how to artical.
Sorry I didn't get to you sooner, may washing machine went out too..... :)

so next time won't be so bad now will it....good for you man... :D A word of advise, inspect the cables for corrosion, clean the end connections really well, make it shine, and be certain that you check the ground connection to the frame from the battery, that is over looked alot..sometime's that bolt is loose or very dirty under it, gotta have a good ground for all of your electrical...
