Speedo Replacement

Postby bcnv1100 » Thu Jun 02, 2011 8:26 am

Okay so on the way to work yesterday I noticed my speedo needle flicker a little. By the time i was almost to work (25 miles) it was jumping and the gears were whinning away. No choice but to ride it home after work and on the way home all the flickering of the needle made it pop off. So now i'm looking for a new speedo. I looked at JC Whitney and they this one : http://www.jcwhitney.com/chrome-speedom ... 1981o120j3 , I read a few reviews and it seems fine, anybody used one??? or another source for aftermarket that would work?, I saw one site that had the whole originale cluster for sale but they were in the hundreds...

Ebay has them all the time of course still 30 years old?? Next time drop the cable of the back..take two minutes to avoid trashing it completely. Issue with aftermarket..is mounting, gearing and looks.

Are those aftermarket speedos a direct fit? or do they require you to purchase additional hardware such as a new sending unit?

I was wondering the same thing, about just plugging in the new one from JC Whitney, If the old one is like the tach just a cable i guess it all depends on the gearing inside the actual meter. havn't heard from anybody yet that has used one for sure. I asked the JC whitney tech online and they said yes it will work with the 81 1100. Might have to check the refund policy then just give it a shot.

I have been looking at mine for some time now I have found some cable driven speedos with gear ratios of 1:1 , 2:1 and 2240:60 but since I dont know what the factory speedo is I dont know which to look at.
I have been thinking about a Dakota Digital Round speedo and their cable drive adapter. This would cost quite a bit more, but could be woth the cash in the long run.

Or you could just mount a GPS on your bike like I have, and set it so the speed shows up on it - that will be far more accurate anyway. I hardly look at my speedometer, I just glance down at my GPS instead now. I do the same thing in my truck. :)

I had the same problem with my 82 Interstate. I ordered a new cable, installed it and it worked for a week or two then it started the whole needle bouncing/whining bit again. Finally it just quit working all together which is fine, I can guess with in reason my speed by looking at the Tach but the odometer is tied in with the speedo so I have been putting miles on the bike that are not registering. Thinking of replacing the speedo next.

I like the GPS idea best (wish I had thought of it) we have one we use for trips, otherwise it sits on a shelf. I am not worried about Odometer since we dont plan on getting rid of bike while its in rideable condition.
I just worry about the GPS getting wet and then not working (its not an expensive model but its not cheap either)

Dragonrider,

You can buy a waterproof cover for most GPS's. I have one that has an IPX7 rating. That means I can technically immerse it in 3 feet of water for half an hour. I'm not to keen to test that  . I bought an otter box http://www.otterbox.com/OtterBox-1601-G ... ps%20cases for sanity.

So after all this discussion, do we know what the ratio is? I've been looking everywhere for a straight answer, & haven't found one yet. I would like to mount a smaller unit on my 1980, but I do need to know if aftermarket will fit properly. Any info regarding the ration would certainly be appreciated. Is there anyway to contact Mother Honda on this?
Thanks yinz,
Patrick
