Starter problem

Postby emt613 » Thu Jun 02, 2011 8:19 pm

I stopped at a local store today and when I tried to start my bike (83 Aspy) to go home all I got was a click at the solenoid. With the help of two young men we were able to start it by pushing it. Once home I found the stud for the wire on the starter was loose. I wiggled it a few times and it completely FELL OFF the starter. I get this sneeky feeling that this is not one of those things that can be fixed with a rebuild. Am I correct? Can anyone point me in the right direction to find a new starter? THANKS

Generally the rebuild involves internal parts, not the brass stud.It sounds like it was loose, arcing, overheated, ate up and broke off.
The good news.Pull the starter off(it's broke anyways)pull it apart, unsolder and remove the brass stud, get a brass bolt at the hardware store(yes SAE is OK),grind, file or otherwise trim the bolt to fit the same, resolder the wires back on and afix there unto. And Wa La .

Well at least that's what i'd try.I figure if i'm gonna throw it away anyways,I'll give anything a shot(and it's cheep)

db electronics for a new one $76 shipped..I have one..only difference I saw was the sprocket is slightly smaller than stock works well.

The stub can be reattached to the inside bracket..but it a tight space in there..they get broken off when poepl remove the nut w/o holding the bottom lock nut in place and spin the stud.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Just finished installing a new starter on my 83 ASPY. Thanks for the recommendation of DB Electrical. There service was top notch.
