it runs!!..... but doesn't idle well

Postby stancotreau » Mon Jun 06, 2011 6:24 am

8481.1

I have converted my GL1100 to a single carb unit using a solex carb off a VW. Now, when I bought the bike it was not running at all, so I never heard it run. well, it started third try and sounds pretty good, but it doesn't idle very well. Anyone here know where I should start to adjust for the idle on a solex carb?

also, it smokes as it warms up...... I have read that this usually occurs after a bike has sat. this bike has sat for two years, I will try to ride the "smoking" issue away after I rebuild the brake calipers.

thanks for any input
Stan

Can't address the idle issue but if the bike is smoking at start up on the lest side only, that is normal when it is left on the side stand. If both sides smoke then you could just have rings that haven't seated properly yet after sitting for two years or the valve seals are dried out from sitting.

stanco, i also have a single carb on mine. Do you have your vacuum advance hooked up to your new carb? This can greatly effect the idle as i found out. Also make sure to play with your mixture screw and get that just right cause even if its off by a millimeter it will act funny.

yes, I did hook up the vacum advance. I just received a sheet describing the adjustment process for a solex carb. I hope that will sort it out
