gl1100 front caliper missing washer?

Postby wickedinaz » Sat Jun 11, 2011 2:41 pm

Apart for a while, just put brakes on the 83, and mounting calipers back on to the caliper bracket. On the right front, of course the 2 bottom bolts and sleeve are fine, but the larger top bolt that should be lubed, where it screws into the bracket, there appears to be a 1/16 or so space between the caliper mount, and the bracket it mounts to. Is there supposed to be some kind of washer here, or is it supposed to move back and forth a little. I'm enclosing a crude drawing...the space is on the right side of the caliper bracket, and would be on the outside of the caliper mounting bracket.

There should be a rubber boot on top of the place on the caliper bracket where the upper pivot pin goes into:

This boot (and the area inside) should have high-temperature brake grease inside it, and the pivot pin itself should have some applied lightly to its surface. The pivot pin then slides into this rubber boot. The caliper must be able to slide from side to side to allow for any rotor runout as well as pad wear. The upper pin slides in and out of the boot on the caliper frame. The lower (smaller) pin screws into the caliper frame, and the upper part of the pin slides inside a sleeve in the caliper, which has boots on both sides:

Any gap you see between the caliper and the upper pin's receptacle should be taken up by the rubber boot - I suspect yours may be missing?

Have you had a look through the pictures in How to rebuild your front brake calipers?
