1982 GL1100 Aspencade smokes at startup

Post by saltydawg1967 » Sat Jun 11, 2011 9:11 pm

I am getting a puff of smoke about 70% of the time when I initially start up the engine when cold. After it run for a few minutes it does not smoke. Bike has 128K Miles on it. I am thinking the valve stem seals are bad. Does this sound right? If so, any good documentation on changing them out?

I am also planning on a nice long road trip around the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado in September. Problem is I have a bad back and my tailbone hurts after awhile. Any good information on extra seat padding and driver backrest for my model? I am not opposed to aftermarket seats or even recovering to get a good thick soft cushion.

Smoke could be oil leaking to left side if on the side stand..try using center stand and see it it goes away..otherwise oil seal a good guess or rings.

lots of gel, air and foam pads out there but it's kind of an individual thing..some like one and others another?? Depends on your butt AND your pocketbook? Some are $200 or more.some $80..back rests too. lots out there..I like the ones that there is a rail that attaches to the top shock bolt and the top rear engine mount and then the rest attaches to the rail..so I can remove it easily if I want and also very adjustable..location and tilt!!! Sorry don't know brand got it with my bike.

My wifes '82 also smokes at start up and it is on a voyager conversion kit, I have been told that the reason hers smokes is that we slightly overfill the oil because oil should be added on center stand and the extra wheels (kit) sit lower than the stand so the reading is not accurate (have to remove center stand to install voyager kit).

As for a back rest both our bikes came with the same back rest's I have been told that they were sold by Honda for the wings.
