Sluggish Tachometer

Postby tallman21 » Sun Jun 12, 2011 9:43 pm

So i just got a new tachometer cable and a new tach because the face on the old tack had popped off and i dont know now to get into it. When i installed the tach and then cable and started the bike, it work but it was really sluggish. As an example when i reved the bike up the tach very slowly rose up to 4k rpm and stopped. any idea why it is sluggish? I lubbed the cable to see if that helped.

The lube on the needle pivot points has hardened.Remove the chrome ring, separate the front from the metal base, lube the needle bearings(wd40,small drop),and re-assemble.It will loosen up.My spedo did that.I was running 60 by the time it showed 25.

Can I assume that the new one you got is just new to you?Or a aftermarket.
Being cheep, and wanting to reuse rather than buy a new spedo,So I bent the ring lip at the bottom using side cutters,a little at a time all the way around it.Then re-crimped it back with pliers. It could be cut off but that leaves no way to clamp the 2 halves back together.
You could E-Bay one ,but it is also 30 years old and perhaps in the same condition.
Experiment on your old one first.

You are absolutely corect on me being cheap. I will try carefully opening tho old one... Cause if i can fix that then i can just reuse it and sell the new one.

I was referring to me being cheep, but if you want to admit to that too,OK. :D
I have done so much with so little for so long,I now think I can do anything with nothing.
