82 GL1100 Clutch

Postby wingriderz » Mon Jun 13, 2011 12:54 am

Hi Newbie here. I am actually lookin at this bike tomorrow. and need some advice ..The ad say's needs clutch work . when I emailed him this is what he told me .

I was riding home from work on Thursday and when I went to downshift and pulled in the clutch I felt it pop. I thought the cable snapped so I rode the last 2 blocks home with no clutch. When I checked the cable it was fine so I am assuming that something has broke inside the clutch housing. If you start the bike in neutral it does not feel like it wants to move forward and when I was riding in gear there was no slippage at all.

Any Ideas
Thanks

The clutch mechanism is straight forward. The hand lever pulls on the cable,it pulls on a lever, the lever turns in the housing and pushes a pin into the clutch bucket.I've added 2 pix.
First to check...right side of bike, just in front of the drive shaft boot is the clutch cable and lever.Pull on the clutch handle and see if it moves(about 1/2").If it does And there is little resistance, the mechanism inside the housing is broken. If the lever does not move the cable may be broken mid stream in the housing. That lever takes quite a bit of force to move, you can't operate the lever at the engine by hand.It should have a little play(wiggle)to it,not frozen in the housing.

Thanks Virgil ( virgilmobile )

Is this a common Problem? Doesn't sound too serious ...Is it a simple fix?

I've currently run a 78 gl1000,81,83,84.I've replaced my share of broken cables. So far,I've never had any problem with any mechanism after the clutch lever on the engine. Not that it couldn't happen, but isn't likely.Even if the inside part that pushes the clutch is broken,it is repairable on the frame.
You'll know the damage when you look at it.If the lever just slops around,it's broken off inside.(makes the bike cheaper). If the cable is broken(about $25)the clutch lever wont move with the clutch handle.

If the clutch slack has always been taken up by the cable adjuster instead of the internal adjustment then the cam just inside the clutch housing can come past its stop and thus make the cluth inoperable.
