front engine cover aka transmission cover

Post by newomij » Wed Jun 15, 2011 4:26 pm

I was intending to replace that front cover on my GL1100A because of a stripped out oil drain plug. (Not the plug but where it screws into the cover.) The replacement cover I procured doesn't have the option for the wire that entered into the old cover via the plastic piece that fits onto the edge of the cover. What is that wire for? Is it necessary? Now that I have the old one off, should I consider doing a helicoil?

I think this should be my mantra...
"I hope someone gets back to me soon before I forget where all those parts go!!!"

Thanks for the help. I need it!!

That wire is for your neutral switch. You can see what it connects to here:

The bar on that switch slots into the little forks on the front of the shifter mechanism, visible in the lower left in this picture:

The "new" cover you have is likely from a 1980 or 1981 model, which did not have the neutral switch mounted in that position, it instead had it mounted in the engine case.

Have a look at How to remove and replace your water pump, starting at step 74, and you'll see where and how it fits.
