Ignition base assembly

Postby blackbird » Fri Jun 17, 2011 9:27 am

( '83 Aspy) Had my ignition switch(or wiring) tank on me on Memorial day heading home from a long trip. It had cut out only once before, then worked flawlessly all weekend, until 150 miles from home. Quite a chore to get the whole switch out, but managed to. I cannot tell if its the switch or wiring. I keep hearing that there are many that have had to replace the wiring or switch. The after-market switch from Parts and More has a plug-type base, whereas the unit on the bike has the wires soldered to the base assembly. Also, the length of the key tube is longer on the OEM.
Any help would be appreciated: I cannot seem to find a pig-tail after-market with the base assembly hard-wired. Is there OEM available?
Thanks for any help

If wiggling you key gets it going again it's the base unit.which is available on eBay for $9 from a guy in Fl who has a good rep. But you can buy a total aftermarket ignition/key assembly for $25 form most dealers..not HOnda>>>but then you'd have two keys for your bike..

Actually the base unit can be usually be repaired by soldering a bubble of solder on the contact points..will last several years but not 25 like the original copper contacts.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

Thanks for the reply. I have looked on eBay and cannot seem to find the individual in FL that you say makes these ignition bases. Any help would be appreciated. I don't understand why Honda made the '83A with the solid unit, and not the plug-type in other years.

Just an update as to where this problem is: I took the ignition switch out ( what a nightmare to get at the nuts, wiring, etc.), cleaned the contacts at both ends of the wiring, put it back together and got it working. I suspect that the wiring base unit just doesn't make good contact and caused the problem. I taped the base unit to the switch to keep more pressure on the contacts, and hopefully that will keep it going for at least another few years. I cannot believe Honda had a straight plug assembly on 80-82, then went to the solid-soldered in '83, which makes it a nightmare to work with. Oh well!
