tachometer

Postby tallman21 » Fri Jun 17, 2011 1:29 pm

Here is a weird one for you guys. I got a new tach cable and replaced the old one. I also took apart my old tach and sprayed some wd 40 onto the coils. Basically the tach is super sluggish most of the time. Sometimes it does work like it should. Ie. It shows my rpms rise quickly instead of slowly catching up to the actual rpms. Any idea whats up? Is it still the tach or is it the cable?

Most likely the tach - and spraying WD-40 would probably make the problem worse, not better, as WD-40 leaves behind an oily film (it is not designed as a lubricant, it's actually designed to prevent corrosion in aircraft stored for long periods of time).

So what would be a good way to get this tachometer functioning proper, clean with some kind of cleaner spray, what should we use to lube it? Oil, lightweight grease, silocone lube spray, what would anyone recommend..? For this?

Haven't had one apart, so I can't give much insight, sorry! My approach would be to take it apart and try to see anything that could be causing it to bind up inside.

GahH! its ok, i bought another one off a local guy with a few spare goldwings. The "new" tach works great minus the fact that it is silver and my old one was black :? Just means my bike now looks like it has a black eye haha
