Driver Backrest research

Postby saltydawg1967 » Sat Jun 18, 2011 12:05 am

Hi all. I am researching a driver backrest for my 82 GL1100A. I am not finding any of the ones that came 'stock', only aftermarket ones. The ones that I see the most is part number 673-816K. I've seen it on several Goldwing websites such as usedgoldwingparts or goldwingcycleparts. Does anybody know if these are good back rests? If not, any other options you are aware of? I am really needing one for my back.

I have a 1981 1100I and I just finished the install and a ride with the backrest you mentioned. I like it. Good quality product and good fit. Needed one small modification to one hole to make it fit. Couldn't get it to line up to get the motor mount bolt back in. When I mean small I mean it. 45 seconds with a round file. Maybe 2 mms. The only other thing to mention is I can get the left side cover off but not the right. Mount is in the way but again just a little bit. If I loosen up the motor mount bolt I can get the cover off. Picked it up off ebay. Cycle Cellar. Best price I could find. From add on accessories.

I have the same style on my bike, my problem is I am a big guy. I am 6'2" and go about 250. I find that I feel pushed up too far on the tank and I have the back rest back as far as I can without closing in on the passenger. So I have to decide wether it is more important to rest my back or have comfortable positioning on the ride. But I use it regardless how I feel when my son rides with me, it gives him a good handle to hang on to and makes him feel safer on back, so I will endure any discomfort for my little guy!!! lol

You are right I had to move it pretty far back to feel comfortable. I ride one up for now. Wife's knee is out of commission. I figure I will have to take it off to ride 2 up.

I have mine all the way back, but have to move it forward when my wife is on the back. I just ordered a trunk relocation kit from wingstuff.com - hopefully moving the trunk back a few inches will make us both more comfortable.

Sounds good. Can you post after you install it and let me know how it works?

Will do. I won't be able to get it installed until at least next weekend (maybe longer), so it might be a couple of weeks.

I ordered one of the relocation kits also. Once I got it and was looking at it and what they want you to do, I sent it back. Yours maybe a better quality one than I had, but it wanted me to drill holes in the trunk, and with that kit you loose the option to have the quick unlock and removal of the trunk. The whole thing looked cheap to me so I sent it back. What I am thinking about now is finding another rack that the trunk mounts to and cutting and welding to actually make the original rack longer and have it rechroamed.

That is why I asked about it after you received it. I had heard you lost the functionality of removing it. Wish I could weld but it sounds like a plan. If you go with it post some pictures. Sounds good.

Installed the trunk relocation kit toid iday. Install was a piece of cake, and it moved the trunk back 2 inches. Seems to be sturdy and well made, and the holes lined up with minimal persuasion. My wife sat on it in the driveway and thought it would be more comfortable than before, but we'll have to road-test it to be sure.
All in all I think it's a good unit, does what they said it would and no downside that I can see.
