gl1100 idle problems

Postby drmichael@excite.com » Wed Jun 22, 2011 12:30 am

My bike starts easily, runs smooth all the way up to red line. But it won't idle. I have adjusted the idle screw all the way in and out to no effect. I have to manually keep the idle up so I won't stall out at lights or other stops and turns. I also have significant backfiring when I decelerate.

Last fall I cleaned the carbs and had them synced. This spring I derusted my tank (twice). The problem with the idling happened after I put my bike back together. I didn't have the problem even before the carb work. It ran rough but idled ok. I have used sea foam.

Any ideas?

Thanks-

Sounds like you are having a problem with the air cutoff valve. Maybe you left the vacuum line off when you put the carbs back on or it could be defective.

Thanks-I'll check that out when I get home tonight. I hope it's that simple-don't want to pull the carbs again unless I have to!

See other recent post "My idle problems revisited." You and he and I have a similar set of symptoms. I have just replaced my timing belts and adjusted the valves and the bike is running great -- except, after it warms up the revs want to stay at 3000. I will try to get to use a friend"s mercury sticks tomorrow to dial in the carb synch. I will check back in a few days to see how you guys are doing.

Thanks. I checked my air lines (air cutoff valve) and they are all clear and connected. Doing the valves and such is beyond my mechanical skill set-so I hope I can get it cleared up without have to go that far.

Adjusting valves is one of the easier things to do on your bike. When was your timing last checked? If you know that your timing belts were inspected or replaced recently go ahead and adjust your valves. ( Yes it is a diy job, not hard at all.) Did you replace your fuel filter after de rusting your tank? Are you sure your carbs are synched exactly ( well amost exactly right )?

You still may have a defective Air cutoff valve. Backfiring at decel is what the valve is there to prevent.

I checked the hose to what I think is the main air cutoff valve and it seemed ok. In the manual it says each carb has an air cutoff valve-but I couldn't find any pictures of the exterior cutoff valve-so I gave it my best shot. Any place I can search for a picture in case I'm not looking in the right place?
Thanks for your help.

Macmusick
Thanks for the further input.
The timing belts were replaced last summer before I bought it. I read your other posts on your GW and will see if I can use those ideas when I work on it this weekend. I am not gutsy enough to try to sinc them myself-yet-but I have a guy who is great at it and will get that done next week if all else fails.

Thanks for the support!
