Valve chatter

Postby glasshead » Thu Jun 23, 2011 11:39 am

I posted this in the 'How to' section, but I guess people don't go there much unless they need a specific solution.

Anyway, I adjusted the valves on my 83 interstate last week. It all but eliminated my chain clatter on take off and I got 44 mpg on the first (and only so far) tank of gas in city driving. What I have a lot more than before is valve chatter, especially noticable at 3,000 rpms. I think I read somewher that it was normal, but thought I would check with the 'experts'. ;)

Thanks

No "expert" here , but I do run a 83 interstate,350 miles on a re-ring job.No it doesn't have hydraulic zero lash valve adjusters and it does bit of ticking.I notice it more around 3500 rpm on mine.Above and below (500rpm)and it seems quieter.I suppose if I replaced all the valves, guides, rocker arms cam shaft, etc, due to some wear spots, flat spots on the cam, wear on the rocker pivot,it may be quieter. It did have 156k miles on it,so as long as they are adjusted OK and the ticking isn't a clatter I don't mind.

I'll live with the noise rather than picking up the pieces that fall off my neighbors Harley.

The 'noise' doesn't bother me a bit. Just making sure it was supposed to sound that way. ;)
