82 GL100A tear down and build up

Post by saltydawg1967 » Sat Jun 25, 2011 5:34 pm

So, I am still working on my 82. Done tons of work to it and still working on it. I have it all apart replacing water pump, timing belts and springs, valve seals, etc. (see list below of things I have done or am doing). The question I have is this... since I have everything off right now and access to most everything, should I change the headgaskets and thermostat? I have no indication that I need to on either. I am just not sure if I should take advantage of the access while I am in there. The bike smokes on startup quite a bit even if on the center stand. Finally, if you guys see something I missed on my list, please let me know. I have the radiator, false tank, front cover, waterpump, valve covers, camshafts, fuel pump all off right now and getting ready to put it all back together.

1 Rebuild rear brake caliper
2 Replace rear brake line
3 Replace rear brake rotor
4 Replace rear brake pads

Test your pulse generator at the plug [ohms], test your vacuum advance for leaks[mitty vac pump], check all hose's for air leaks, test your fan switch once you get it running, test your spark caps and wires, coil. that's what I would do, but do as you wish..Oh I'd just replace the wires with new and the caps too..Inspect the plug to the Stator[three yellow wires] lives under the battery side cover next to the pulse generator plug..test rectifier regulator...Clean all electrical connections you can find from the main gound to the frame to the solenoid...Yep that's what i'd do..

I most likley woul go ahead and replace "any" normal wear item now (such as thermostat) as normally hapens with me once I get things back together and am happy, Pop, the item I did not change fails.
My personal feelings are to take Radiator to a shop and have them clean it and check it for problems, it wont cost much and can save headaches later.
