Handlebar upgrade

Postby DragonRider » Tue Jun 28, 2011 9:17 pm

I am looking at swaping out the handlebars for more modern 1" bars and updating all the controls as well, does anyone have any ideas the bast way to get this done? I was looking at making a spacer and bolting custom risers.

Two options come to mind. Spacers don't appeal to me.

Swage the 1 inch bar to 7/8 at point of mount

If using a forge the chrome will discolour. Cold hydraulic press may be better but will work harden the metal

Second, grind the mounts ID 1/8 larger larger.. Might want to first add a bit of metal by welding and offset the opening to avoid weakening mount.

Hi, looking at risers, at:

and Honda/Suz adaptor kit;

http://www.oldbikebarn.com/Baron-Custom ... ry=3217624

My problem is that the original handlebars are clamped down to the steering triple tree platform, with 2 - 2-hole clamps and 4 bolts, but the $109 risers seem to come with 2/not 4 mounting bolts, to hold them down onto the steering column.

Are the stock handlebars on other (different makes/models, &/or newer) bikes clamped down onto something that is held down, onto the triple tree, with 2/not 4 bolts?

To fit the risers onto my '81 gl1100, it seems maybe I would need a flat chunk of aluminum, or flat slab of steel, with 4 holes to bolt it down on the triple tree.

Then, the risers could sit on top of this flat piece of metal, being held in place by the 2 bolts that come with the risers.

Then, my new, lower profile, handle bars would clamp onto the tops of the 2 risers (probably with 4 bolts and lock-washers, that I assume come with the risers kit (but are not shown in the picture).

:?:

Thanks, in advance.

I think it would be a whole lot easier to use universal 7/8" bar risers, than to try to adapt a special Yamaha cruiser bar mount to a Goldwing.

There are 7/8 mount to 1" bar spacer/adapters available as well.
