Transmision ?????????

Postby rockguitar1969 » Thu Jun 30, 2011 3:15 am

Ok guys here is a real brain teaser for you all. I just replaced the clutch on my 83 interstate (Because the Old one wasn't there, yeah I mean it was missing when I bought the bike) When the bike was on the center stand and I put it in gear the real wheel spins and changes speed with the throttle. I can shift normally with it on the center stand. The minute I put it on the ground And put it in gear nothing happens. It doesn't even feel like it is trying to move at all at any throttle position. Engine runs normally, everything else seems normal. Just no forward movement.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right off the top ,I'd center stand it,start it,put it in second, let out the clutch and hit the rear brakes. This should kill the motor. If not,I suspect that the clutch may be assembled, and in the bucket, but not binding the bucket and center assembly together.

With that said.the wheel will turn with oil friction in the assembly.no load.
Your problem MAY be as listed.
Clutch not being fully engaged..Cable mis-adjusted or no free play on the clutch lever(engine)
Missing the SPRINGS.

Worse case things, stripped splines in the drive shaft coupler, clutch assembly or differential, rear wheel.Something really bad in the transmission.
Here's some pix to help

OK lets assume since this is the first time I have installed a clutch on a goldwing that I did it wrong or have it adjusted wrong. There is little to no free play in the clutch lever right now. So I am assuming I did something wrong. What do I need to adjust and How do I know that I Have it right since it is such a pain in the a$# to get at the darn thing.

The handle bar clutch lever should have 1/4 to 1/2 inch of play at the end of the handle, adjusted by the round lock nut at the cable end(hand lever) and at the engine end.The clutch lever that comes out of the block should also have a little free movement, maybe 1/8" where the cable hooks up.I'd start there first.Unhook the cable from the engine and check free play there. It's adjusted under the clutch cover.
