Polished Valve covers and timing belt covers

Postby saltydawg1967 » Sun Jul 03, 2011 6:57 pm

Just wanted to share a bit of the work I am doing on the 82. While I have the heads in the shop and I am in Galveston for the 4th, I brought down the valve covers and timing belt covers to clean up. They were really crudded up and stained. With a lot of elbow grease, I buffed and cleaned them. I ALMOST ordered some chrome ones but really wanted to keep this bike OEM. Any suggestions for a final finish so the luster will stay?

i like using brown jewellers rouge on a soft cotton buff to get the final polish. To keep it, use a good wax to seal it up. If you don't they'll get cruddy pretty quick.

For a final polishing step, just use a polish that also claims "protection". I hit my polished pieces each Spring with an application of SemiChrome and they last all summer. My personal experience seeing chrome covers is that 90%+ of them have had the chrome flaking and pitting.

Thanks for the advice. These covers are original and all aluminum. I've buffed them to a nice shine. Just wanna keep'em that way as long as possible.
