Self-cancelling turn signals

Postby radcded » Mon Jul 04, 2011 9:55 am

Hi all. I'm new to this forum and new to a 82 Aspencade. Have already learned alot just by reading so many of these posts. My question, what makes the self-cancelling turn signals work? My signals work but I have to cancell them myself. Any info would be deeply appreciated. Thanks for a great site. :D

Magic. :)

Honestly - there is a black box that decides when to cancel them. I believe it takes into account vehicle speed and handlebar angle. I don't know what the actual rules are. That said, on MY bike, I'm pretty sure it has a random timer in there that just shuts them off whenever it feels like it, usually while I'm sitting at a complete stop at a stoplight. Sometimes they work properly, but usually they don't.

The wings have 2 methods of canceling the turn signal function.
1st is a mechanical solenoid that releases the turn signal lever.
2nd is a electronic cancel."push to cancel"
Each one uses a different controller(black box)

If your bike has a push to cancel(push the center of signal switch)it's all electronic.

3 things determine cancel.
1.handlebar movement(angle sensor under triple tree)
2.speed increase(pulses from the spedo system)
3.time on.usually 20-30 seconds.
If you can tell me about the switch,I can help to test it.

The turn signal switch can only be pushed left or right, it can't be pushed in to cancel.

Then they are canceled by a mechanical solenoid.I'll work up the test procedures tonight and post them.
Does your bike have electronic spedo or a mechanical dial ?

It has a mechanical dial. My speedo doesn't work and I have a replacement coming. Should be here today, hopefully. I really do appreciate the info I'm receiving.

The spedo is a part of the canceler system. There is a switch in the back of it.It's a reed switch.Be sure that the replacement is the same.
Here's the schematic with notes. If you need further details, just ask.

Update on my self-cancelling turn signals. Finally got the speedometer replaced. Took the bike out for a spin to make sure it worked. It did and so did the self-cancelling turn signals. Thanks to all who provided the info. Also did a cooling system flush. Thanks WingAdmin for the how to article. Made the job that much easier. This newby to a 1100 Goldwing has alot to learn but so far so good. This is a great site for the knowledge and help provided by the members. Thanks again. :D
