On a 83 gl1100 which cylinder is #1

Postby wingman37 » Fri Jul 08, 2011 9:48 am

I just bought an 83 interstate, I used it for 1000 miles and decided it would be a good idea to change the timing belts because the guy I bought it from had no idea when they were last done. From info on this site I bought Gates replacement belts. i lined up the 2 cam gears with the marks on the housing (no knowing which cylinder is # 1) i didnt think it mattered since I was only slipping off the old belts and putting on the new. I could still see if anything moved. Anyway i reassembled everything and it wont start ... its trying to go but will not catch. I need to reset everything and start again .. preying i didnt hit the valves.
I honestly cant see how anything moved while i removed the old belts ... the old were off and the new ones on in a matter of a minute. Any advise is appriciated

Oh,by the way, while trying to impress my wife with my expert repairs,my 1200 would not run. :geek:

She had the nerve to ask if " I " turned on the gas.

Of course,I forgot

Heres an update ... for anyone thats interested
So, here I am scratching my head ... wondering how it all went wrong. I bent the 2 intake valves on the right side. I have now taken off both heads and will be doing a top end rebuild. Im looking on the bright side ... because as it turns out 4 of the 8 valve seals needed replacement anyways and 2 out of the 4 valves need to be lapped in. I will recondition both heads and start riding with a good knowledge of the the bikes condition..... at least thats my story and im sticking to it !!!

Newtons Law is in full effect here ... IF IT AIN'T BROKE ... DONT F... WITH IT !!

FYI...when you remove the right side belt the sprocket moves about two teeth enough to bend valves..it moves because that side is under pressure from the cams when the cam sprocket is in the correct position for setting the belt. YOU have to force the sprocket into alignment and hold it there while you install the belt..then rotate the 180 and set the tensioner on the left side.

AND ALWAYS ROTATE BY HAND several revolutions to check it out before using the starter even with the ignition off.

HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
