chargeing system woes

Postby psp4956 » Sun Jul 10, 2011 10:15 am

:? haveing chargeing system problems on 1980 gl1100: getting only 12.8v at 5k rpm, ohmmeter battery + to gnd. had alt hard wired using crimpons, taking them off to solder. alt testing: continuity between all 3 yellows, not grounded inside, so far, so good. tested the yellows on the other side, (going to rectifier?), 2 wires good so far, one seems to have a ground. good, bad, ugly? evidence of a bad rectifier?

I would say yes you have a defective regulator / rectifier. Both in one unit. Can't see any other path for a grounded yellow wire.

Not necessarily - you don't know what the circuitry inside the regulator is doing. It's possible you may see a grounded yellow wire when in a power-off condition.

Have you checked the trigger wire of the regulator (the one that turns it on), as well as the output wires (red) and the condition of its ground?

Might the black wire be the trigger (exciter)wire? didnt check that
but did check the reds also, as per the manual. the yellows did seem off, not all the same. 2 same, 3d off plenty. removed rectifier from my 82 and compared that, the reading were much more satisfactory. installed it. trying to find my solder gun, (dang where did i put that), to solder the yellows.
thank you for your input
Paul
