1980-1983 Crank Shaft Question?

Postby ljtelfer » Tue Jul 19, 2011 10:30 am

My story is below here is my question: From what I see the 1980-81 have a different part number for the crank shaft than the 1982-83 crank shaft. Are these crank shats not interchangable? And why?

I bought a 1981 GL1100 Interstate and i was having a problem with the bike starting. The engine would bind up, well I took the engine out and the rear cover off and found that the teeth on the alt/starter shaft gears were broke off. So I bought a used starter/alt shaft assembly from a junk yard and put it in the engine and everything went good, but the engine was making a bad noise and then binded up again. So out came the engine and I had the same problem. Those gears on the starter/alt shaft we broke off. Well the teeth on the crank shaft gear that drive the alt/starter shaft are worn and probably are creating my problem. So I need a new crank shaft. Now on to my question: from what I see the 1980 and 81's have a different part number than the 1982-83 for their respective crank shafts. Are these crank shafts not interchangable?

Ok so if the 82-83's have different gears, can I put a 82-83 crank into my 81 without any problems. It does look like the 82-83's had different gears in the tranny compared with the 80-81's.
